Creating My Own Lipstick!

On Wednesday, I had the amazing opportunity to create my own unique lipstick from scratch. It was an incredibly fun and creative experience which I highly recommend for all beauty lovers to do, especially lipstick junkies like me! The best part about these lipsticks is that they are cruelty free and are plant based, so there are no nasties in them.

I was invited down by Tracey, the wonderful owner of Lip Lab Gold Coast which she operates out of her salon, The Ultimate Beauty House, down in Labrador on the Gold Coast. When I arrived, Tracey ran me through the process of creating the lipstick and asked me to think of a shade that I’d like my lipstick to be. Naturally, I went to that one shade that I’ve hunted high and low for but just can't find, so I decided to make it my own special shade!

While I was looking through the swatch charts, Tracey set up the station ready to begin. I was literally so excited, I felt like I was creating my own makeup line in a lab! One day Ash, one day…

Tracey used various pigments to begin creating the base shade I chose from the chart which we can manipulate later on in the process. She added various amounts of different pigments to manipulate the shade. This part was so much fun, as I got to see how the shade comes to life. At first I was a little nervous as it was quite dark, but as Tracey manipulated the pigments, it really came to life!

Next, I had to choose a base for the lipstick. The options were: Crème, matte, butter (sheer) vegan or lip gloss. I of course, chose a matte finish as I feel this type of finish looks better on me and lasts longer throughout the course of the day requiring less touch ups.

Once the matte base was added into the pigment, Tracey asked me to try the shade on to see if I was happy with it. I loved it! I was so happy with the outcome of the shade and I was even more excited that it is my own unique shade that no one has!

Next step, flavour! There were so many different options of flavours that I could add which made my decision incredibly hard. After smelling the entire range, I decided to chose Peach Sorbet. It is a delicious fragrance which reminds me of Summer, my favourite season. Perfect!

After flavours, you also have the option to add an additive. These include lip plumper, SPF or antioxidant. I chose not to simply because I just wanted a simple lipstick, although Tracey was saying these additives are very popular, especially lip plumper!

Now it was time to bring this baby to life, Tracey heated the lipstick then poured it into the mould of my choice to cool and set. I could choose between an original mold or a gothic mold. I chose gothic as I’ve never seen a lipstick bullet like this before so I knew my lipstick was going to be incredibly unique!

While we waited for the lippy to set, Tracey let me chose what casing I wanted for my lipstick with the options being black or silver. I chose silver as it made the lipstick colour pop! I also got the chance to name my lipstick to, I wonder what name I should choose…

Finally, my masterpiece was ready! Tracey slipped the casing on to reveal my lipstick. I am in love with it! The bullet looks amazing and I absolutely adore the shade. Tracey did a fantastic job at making the exact shade I was after. I couldn’t believe it! Tracey put a lip shield over the lipstick to protect it and instructed me to pop it in the fridge for an hour when I get home to help it completely set. I can't wait to wear it!

And here it is, introducing January!

I chose this name as I am born in January and wanted a name that reflects me. I love it!

Note: Nude lipstick is in the original mould, January is in the Gothic mould.
