In life there are always rules that tell us what to do and what not to do, and the beauty world is no exception. Over the years there have been more and more beauty rules circulate, telling us how to use certain products and what is highly frowned upon that we are not allowed to do. I know I’m not the only one here when I say I like to break the rules every now and again, and some of the beauty rules that have been written, I break with pleasure!
Here are a few of the rules I love to break and why I break them.
Rule 1: Not taking makeup off before bed
Lets be honest, sometimes I completely forget that I have makeup on and head to bed, especially the days where I just have brows, mascara and a little concealer on. But sometimes, I just get too lazy (or have drunk too much) and hit the hay with a full face. I know that it’s really bad for my skin and will stain my pillow but I don't do it all the time, promise!
Rule 2: Not to prime is a crime!
I barely ever prime my face before putting on foundation. I don't seem to have an issue with the makeup wearing away and I haven't ever used a primer that stands out and leaves my makeup in perfect condition as when it was first applied. (If you have a great one feel free to let me know in the comments) I usually just wash my face, moisturize then go straight in to foundation. Oops!
Rule 3: Liner before lipstick
I break this rule all the time. I don’t feel the need to line my lips and I don't have any issues with lip products bleeding. I also don't over line my lips. The only time that I'll use a lip liner is when I’m using a dark lip colour, a very matte lipstick that's tough to apply or if a liquid lipstick is a little too runny and needs assistance in staying in the lines. I can’t even remember the last time I used a lip liner!
Rule 4: Contouring is outdated and obvious
I am guilty of breaking this rule! I love a chiseled cheek, a sleek nose contour and making my chubby cheeks look thinner. Contouring is a life savior that I love including into my makeup routine. I know I’m not the only one that loves contouring, but of cause it needs to be blended and not left looking orange. No one likes a muddy contour!
Rule 5: Only apply blush to the apples of your cheeks
This rule needs to be broken! The way you apply your blush, depends on the shape of your face. Applying the blush only on the apples of your cheeks can make your face look chubby and unflattering. I have an oval face, so I find applying blush along my cheek bones very flattering and helps to cut down the chubbiness of my cheeks.
Rule 6: Wash your hair everyday
Goodness no! Washing your hair everyday leaves your hair feeling dry, brittle and limp. Your hair produces oil that helps to keep it nourished, healthy and grow. By washing your hair everyday you are stripping your hair from the natural oils. I tend to wash my hair every three-four days in the colder months and every second day in the hotter months. By allowing your hair to keep the natural oils you will notice your hair looking much healthier and shinier!
Rule 7: The best bronzers are ones that glimmer
Now this one is debateable, although I prefer to break it. I like using matte bronzers as I feel they look better on my face and I’m not a fan of an overly shimmery face. I do use glimmer bronzers, however I use them in moderation with a very light hand that I dust over my face for a sun kissed glow. I won't substitute a matte bronzer for one that glimmers at all!
I’m sure after reading a few of these that you have now discovered that you too, break some of these rules on a daily basis. Some of these are too hard not to break! If you break these rules or know of any other beauty rules you break, leave me a comment.
Thanks for reading!
