Worth The Hype? Nivea Aftershave Balm
The Nivea Aftershave Balm has been the talk of the beauty world recently thanks to YouTuber NikkiTutorials, who used this product as a moisturiser and primer quite a few months back. Nikki borrowed the product off her boyfriend as she had ran out of moisturiser and discovered that it doubles as an amazing primer.
The Nivea Aftershave Balm contains a product called glycerin, which is an ingredient that helps adhere makeup to the skin and is found in majority of makeup primers. This is the reason that the balm worked so well as a primer. Once Nikki had spread the news of how good this product is, it quickly became sold out in stores and trialled by many makeup and beauty enthusiasts, myself being one.
I didn't try this product until quite a few months after the hype had begun as I don't use primers very often so I didn't see the point of me trying this product. More and more, I began to see Instagram posts and YouTube videos raving about this product, so I decided to see what all the fuss was over. Here is my verdict!

The balm is packaged in a simple glass jar featuring a screw top lid, so unfortunately it is not ideal for travel or minimising waste. There is quite a lot of product in the jar however, so it will last a while as you only need a very tiny amount of product. The balm is made up of a very thin liquidy white formula, which is easy to blend into the skin and dries almost instantly. A little goes a very long way with this product so only use a small drop. The Nivea Aftershave Balm has a very manly scent to it which I love, but don't worry, once your makeup is applied the smell goes away. You won't smell like a man all day, I promise!
To get the best effect from using this product as a primer, continue to massage the balm into the skin until it feels quite tacky. It is now ready for foundation!
I have been testing this product with various foundations, both powder and liquid and during various occasions including clubbing and work, and I have finally reached my conclusion.
I Love This!
I love using this product underneath my Too Faced Born This Way foundation as it does not make me oily after an entire days wear (8 -12 Hours). I have normal to oily skin along my T-Zone, meaning I always, always get oily with any foundation I wear, regardless i use I primer or not. This product is the only product that I have noticed a difference with in regards to my oil situation. As far as priming goes, when I look at my face in mirror at 7:30pm, after wearing this combo of products since 7am this morning, I only see the teeny tiniest amount of oil on my nose. Apart from that this makeup is perfecto! I can not complain.
I highly recommend giving this product a try if you have oily skin, or just want a decent reasonably priced primer. It retails for $11 in Australia, so in comparison to the standard price of primers, this is a bargain!
Give it a go and let me know your thoughts. If you have already used it, I'd love to know how it worked for you.
Until next time,
Ashlee Louise xo
