The Battle Of The.... Beauty Sponges!
With an abundance of makeup sponges on the markets at present varying in price, it made me wonder, Is the cult favourite Beauty Blender really that great? What is the difference between a cheap sponge and an expensive sponge?
Make up sponges vary in colour, shape, density, uses (foundation, contour, highlight) and quality, which usually effects the price of the sponge. Like anything that is expensive, it's either a popular brand or is decent quality. This made me curious as to how several sponges varying in price perform. Sometimes things that are cheaper are actually better than the expensive version. With this theory in mind, I decided to purchase a few different sponges and put them to the test!
First up: Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge
RRP: $15.95 (AUD)
Use: (Damp) Foundation, Cream products.
Design: Egg shape pointed tip with a flat base
Feel: Squishy and slightly dense both dry and wet.
Pros: I like how this sponge is dense, I feel as though it packs on product more evenly and thicker (not cake) I also like how once this product is wet, it doesn't absorb any product so there is no wastage.
Cons: The tip is way too fat once damp making the tip too big to get into the under-eye area to blend out concealer. Also, I find this sponge stains very easily making it look dirty when it is actually clean.
Final Thoughts: I do like this sponge and have repurchased it since. I result to a brush for the under eye area which isn't the end of the world. The tip is great for cream contour!
Next up: Chi Chi Cosmetics Sponge
RRP: $5.95 (AUD)
Uses: (Wet) Foundation, Cream Products
Design: Egg shape with pointed tip and flat base
Feel: Very soft and squishy. Molds to a shape when squeezed. Weird!
Pros: The only pro I have about this is the shape. I like the flat bottom as it is easier to apply foundation with. The tip is small enough for the inner corners to blend concealer.
Cons: This thing drinks product like no tomorrow. Two pumps GONE! Doesn't matter how wet this sponge is, it seems to find a way to absorb any liquid product. Not okay! This makes it impossible to layer up foundation or even apply it!
Final Thoughts: Love the price tag but not a fan of this product. As you can see in the photo on the left mine sponge broke down and is now out of shape. :(
Lastly, The Infamous Beauty Blender!
RRP: $24 (AUD)
Uses: (Wet) Foundation, Cream Products
Design: Egg shape with a pointed tip
Feel: Dense and slightly squishy.
Pros: This product is such a cult favourite across the beauty world, so naturally I had high expectations and boy where they met! This product is amazing. It blends and builds up product seamlessly. The sponge doesn't absorb all the product and the tip fits PERFECTLY into the inner corners.
Cons: I wish it had a flat base as I prefer that for foundation as it fits my face better.
Final Thoughts: Highly recommend spending the extra on this product. I wish i got the black so the stain don't show as much, but there is always next time ;)
Overall, I put these sponges to the test and was quite happy with the outcome. In this case, the more expensive the better which could be due to the products used to create the sponge.
